Annabelle

Annabelle (a.k.a. Anna) was a vampire and the daughter of Pearl. She came back to Mystic Falls as early as the Night of the Comet Festival and watched Damon miss his every opportunity he had to open the tomb where her mother was. She turned Ben and Logan Fell to help to achieve her goal of finding out how to open the Tomb. Anna later fell in love with Jeremy Gilbert, Elena Gilbert's younger brother but met the same fate as her mother and was staked by John Gilbert. Anna later returns as a ghost at the end of Season 2 in the episode, As I Lay Dying.

Jenna Sommers

Jenna Sommers was Elena and Jeremy's aunt, who became their legal guardian after their parents were killed in a car crash. During the first two seasons she remained largely unaware of the supernatural forces in Mystic Falls. She used to date Logan Fell, who was turned into a vampire by Anna and was then later killed by Alaric Saltzman. She begins a relationship with Alaric who's Elena and Jeremy’s history teacher. She also went to high school with Mason Lockwood who was Tyler's uncle. Before she became Elena and Jeremy's guardian, Jenna was a party girl especially back in high school, which Mason revealed when he visited. Katherine compelled Jenna and had her spy on Stefan and Elena and then stabbed herself in her stomach while Elena and Alaric watched. At the hospital, the doctors said that she was lucky to be alive.

Her relationship with Alaric became strained after she discovers his wife Isobel was alive, and that he is a vampire hunter. She finally learned the truth after being attacked by Klaus. Shortly after reconciling with Alaric, she was called by Katherine, who tricked her into leaving her house, so Klaus could kidnap her and turn her into a vampire. During the sacrifice, Klaus killed her in order to break the Hybrid curse placed on him.

This character was a relative of the Gilbert Family.

Matt Donovan

Matthew G. "Matt" Donovan is the ex-boyfriend of Caroline Forbes and Elena Gilbert, brother of Vicki Donovan, and a medium. After the death of Elena's parents, Elena broke up with Matt due to needing some time alone to deal with all the things that had happened, although Matt still cares about Elena deeply. Throughout the series, Caroline and Matt begin dating, of whom he encourages to become a more caring, kind, and selfless young woman. He is Jeremy´s best friend.

Matt is a member of the Donovan Family.

Rebekah Mikaelson

Rebekah Mikaelson is a free-spirited Original Vampire. Rebekah was the lover of Stefan Salvatore back in the 1920's, daughter of Mikael and Esther, and also the only sister of an unnamed deceased brother, Elijah, Finn, Kol, and Henrik, and the only half-sister of Niklaus. After the death of Henrik, she became the youngest in the family. Rebekah has the most impeccable instincts and can tell when people are lying to her or others. This is something Klaus calls "borderline supernatural".

Rebekah is a member of the Mikaelson Family.

Elijah Mikaelson

Elijah Mikaelson is an Original Vampire, and the second son of Mikael and Esther. He has six siblings, a deceased unnamed older brother, three younger brothers (Finn, Kol, Henrik), and a younger sister named Rebekah. He also has a half-brother named Niklaus. After Mikael's death, Elijah is the oldest Original alive.

Elijah is a member of the Mikaelson Family.

Alaric Saltzman

Alaric "Ric" Saltzman was a vampire hunter and a history teacher at Mystic Falls High School. He originally came to Mystic Falls to find the vampire that killed his wife, but learned that she voluntarily became a vampire and left him. He also learned that his wife had a child when she was in her teens, a daughter named Elena Gilbert, who is now his student. Alaric began a relationship with her adoptive aunt Jenna. Ironically, he was technically Elena's step-father due to his marriage to Isobel. Following Jenna's tragic death, he seemed to step into his step-father role to Elena and a father figure to her brother Jeremy. He is also Damon's best friend.

As a vampire hunter he designed several weapons to fight vampires which include vervain tranquilizers and arm vest stakes.

      

This character was a relative of Elena Gilbert and the Gilbert Family.

Tyler Lockwood

Tyler Lockwood is a main character who is a hybrid and plays for the football team at Mystic Falls High School. He was a werewolf until being successfully sired into a hybrid by Klaus. In the latest episode he has become, besides Klaus, the only remaining hybrid.

He is the son of Richard Lockwood and Carol Lockwood, and the nephew of Mason Lockwood. He was portrayed to be arrogant, selfish and a bully. But after triggering the family curse that turned him into awerewolf, he has learned to tone his behavior down.

      

He is shown to have an athletic build, and great strength as a human. He also has a short temper and becomes angry very easily. He didn't understand why he behaved the way he did, until Mason came to visit after Richard Lockwood's death.

      

Tyler is a member of the Lockwood Family.

Jeremy Gilbert

Jeremy Gilbert is the adoptive brother and biological cousin of Elena Gilbert, he is a medium, and is a part of The Five. Prior to the beginning of the series, his parents died in a tragic car accident that Elena managed to survive thanks to a vampire, Stefan Salvatore. As a way of coping with the accident, he started dealing and using drugs but soon stopped after the death of his first girlfriend, Vicki Donovan, supposedly because of an overdose. He overdosed on pills after drinking vampire blood in the hope of becoming a vampire and being able to turn off the emotions. He did this following the death of his second girlfriend, Anna. However his attempt failed and the blood healed the damage the pills did.

He started a romantic relationship with Bonnie Bennett which ended after he kissed Anna. Jeremy was shot by Sheriff Forbes after Damon dodged the bullet and was revived by Bonnie, who is a witch and has connections to dead witches with the power to bring him back. However the spell that caused him to be revived gave him the power to see ghosts and he was haunted by Vicki and Anna. He later went to live with family friends in Denver, after being compelled by Klaus to stand in front of a speeding car. Elena feared for his safety and got Damon to compel him to leave. He returned to Mystic Falls after Elena and Damon went to get him once Klaus found out where he was.

His best friend is Matt Donovan. Jeremy is a member of the Gilbert Family.

Bonnie Benett

     Bonnie Bennett is a main female character of The Vampire Diaries. She is best friends with Elena Gilbert and Caroline Forbes. While she fills the role of counselor and confidante, Bonnie is also the brassy-but-cautious witch, who discovers her powers just in time to help out her family and friends.

Bonnie is also noted for having many heroine tendencies, namely, being repeatedly ready to sacrifice herself for her friends. As her powers have increased, the witch has stepped up at pretty much every opportunity to trade her life for those of her friends. Luckily, Bonnie is alive and well; her spell-casting abilities most definitely came in handy when the Original Vampires came to Mystic Falls.

Bonnie is a member of the Bennett Family.

Niklaus Mikaelson

Niklaus Mikaelson (a.k.a. Nik or Klaus) is an Original/Hybrid, and the son of an unnamed werewolf and Esther. He has six siblings: a deceased unnamed older brother, four other half-brothers named Elijah, Finn, Kol, and Henrik, and a younger half-sister named Rebekah. Klaus is also the step-son of Mikael, with whom he had a strained relationship.        

He was first mentioned in a conversation between Rose and Stefan warning him about the Originals, Klaus is believed to be the most hated and feared of all the Originals and those who fear him are desperate for his approval. Over the centuries Klaus has become a recluse who confides in and trusts only the few members of his inner circle.

For over a thousand years Klaus had been trying to break a curse placed on him. He created the myth of the sun and moon curse in order to help find the moonstone and the Petrova Doppelgänger that was needed to break the actual curse. His goal was to bring out his werewolf side so he could sire his own super race of vampire-werewolf hybrids.

In 1492 he finally got his chance to break his curse when he met Katerina Petrova, the final piece for the ritual. He kept her entertained until the full moon, but was unaware that she had found out what he was and what he wanted from her, the knowledge of which precipitated her escape. After Katerina turned into a vampire, he assumed that her family line ended with her and that his chance to break his curse was gone forever. He traveled to Bulgaria and slaughtered her entire family in revenge.

For the next 500 years, Klaus searched for a way to break the curse without the doppelgänger, forcing generations of witches and warlocks to help him for centuries. Along his search for a way to break his curse, Klaus hunted down his family and neutralized them. He also hunted Katerina Petrova, who had escaped him and stolen his moonstone.

He is the main antagonist of Season 2 making his first appearance in Know Thy Enemy, in Alaric's body.

Niklaus is a member of the Mikaelson Family.

Stefan Salvatore

Stefan Salvatore is the hero, a protagonist, and one of the the male leads of The Vampire Diaries. He is a century old (165 year old) vampire. Stefan was born and raised in the supernatural town of Mystic Falls, Virginia. Stefan resides at the Salvatore Boarding House. He is the youngest son of Giuseppe Salvatore and his unnamed mother.  He has an older brother, Damon Salvatore, who is also a vampire. Stefan has had a love-hate, on and off rivalry or relationship with Damon since 1864. Stefan was the former love interest of Katherine Pierce, who was both Stefan and Damon's creator. Stefan's best friend was Alexia Branson. He also has a close, still growing friendship with Caroline Forbes. Stefan also had a close brotherhood and friendship with Niklaus Mikaelson and also, was romantically involved with Rebekah Mikaelson who is Klaus' sister, back in the 1920's.

Stefan met Katherine in 1864 and was magnetically drawn to her. However, Stefan's brother Damon was also in love with Katherine as well. Due to Stefan and Damon's shared love of Katherine, Stefan and Damon became rivals and were in competition for Katherine's affections. Although Stefan was in love with Katherine, he was very much unaware of what she was, which was a vampire. Katherine had been compelling Stefan to drink her blood and had also compelled Stefan to keep Katherine's secret of being a vampire. When Stefan was trying to help Damon save Katherine from being burned in a church after their father, Giuseppe had her captured by the townspeople of Mystic Falls, Stefan, along with Damon was shot by Giuseppe and died afterwards.

Stefan eventually woke up in transition of becoming a vampire. He then visited his father, Giuseppe was shocked to see Stefan "alive", seeing that Stefan was now a vampire. He revealed to Stefan that he was the one who shot both him and Damon. Stefan tells his father that he is going to let himself die and not complete the transition. When Giuseppe comes to attack Stefan with a wooden stake, Stefan underestimates his newborn vampire abilities and accidentally throws Giuseppe to the wall in self-defense, with the stake stabbing Giuseppe in the stomach. Stefan rushes over to help his father remove the stake from his stomach but Stefan becomes overwhelmed and consumed with bloodlust. Stefan drinks his father's blood and therefore completes his transition into a vampire.

      

After he transitions, Stefan convinces his brother Damon to complete his transition. Much to Stefan's happiness, Damon transitions and tells Stefan that he promises him a lifetime of misery. Angry at Stefan with Stefan feeling immensely guilty, Damon abandons Stefan and leaves town, with Stefan still a newborn vampire who was overwhelmed by his bloodlust. Consumed with guilt and pain, Stefan shut off his emotions and became a Ripper, as said by Lexi. However, Stefan learned from Lexi on how to live more compassionately with her help. Between the time of 1864 and the 1900's, Stefan had been living on an animal blood diet, although there have been some times when Stefan had fallen off the blood rails or wagon, once being during the 1920's.

      

In 2009, after many years of being gone, Stefan returned to his home of Mystic Falls to visit his nephew Zach. On May 23, 2009, it is then when Stefan unexpectedly "meets" Elena for the first time. Stefan had heard Elena and her parents', Grayson and Miranda Gilbert, car accident at Wickery Bridge. Stefan miraculously saved Elena's life but unfortunately did not save Elena's parents on time. When he first saw Elena after he pulled her out of the car, Stefan was shocked and suspicious that she coincidentally had an uncanny physical resemblance to Katherine. Stefan starts researching Elena's background, trying to gain info in order to make sure that Elena wasn't really Katherine, whom he feared would be a possible threat to the town. After a short time of research, Stefan finds out that Elena is not Katherine. He is relieved by this and eventually starts to fall for Elena from a far. In order to get to know Elena, Stefan decided to pose as a new student at Mystic Falls High School and ends up in her class.

However, despite Stefan and Elena no longer together, their lives have been tangled up with many complications, obstacles and issues, such as Damon and his feelings for Elena, the unexpected events of Mystic Falls, Katherine, John Gilbert and Klaus. With Katherine's return, the revelation of the existence of the The Originals threaten to destroy Elena, who is a Petrova Doppelganger, in order to break a curse (which is Klaus' werewolf curse to turn into a hybrid). Stefan and Damon searched for ways to save her and they do as much as they can to protect her from Klaus and from all of the dangers of Mystic Falls. At the end, Stefan is forced to become Klaus's right-hand man in exchange for saving his brother's life. As of right now, Stefan seems to be getting back to normal after enduring a long struggle with his Ripper phase.

Damon Salvatore

Damon Salvatore is a the hero, a protagonist, and one of the male leads of The Vampire Diaries. He was the main antagonist in Season One. He is the elder brother of Stefan Salvatore. He was born in 1840 and lived in the colonial town of Mystic Falls with his brother Stefan and his father, Giuseppe Salvatore. He became a vampire in 1864. At the time of his return to Mystic Falls, Damon and Stefan hadn't seen each other in seventy years due to their bitter, violent relationship.

Damon’s sole purpose for coming back to Mystic Falls was to freeKatherine Pierce, the vampire who turned him and the woman he deeply loved. After realizing that Katherine never loved him, Damon started working with Stefan and Katherine’s descendant and doppelgänger, Elena Gilbert, with whom he fell in love with and is now in a romantic relationship with her. Damon is also the head of the Town Council, along with Sheriff Forbes and Carol Lockwood before her death. He currently lives with his new girlfriend, Elena Gilbert in the Salvatore Boarding House since his brother Stefan moved out. For the majority of the first season, Damon was the main antagonist, but during the later seasons, he cooperates with Stefan to protect Elena as he has a change of heart, literally.

He was bitten by Tyler Lockwood, a werewolf, after freeing him during a full moon. He was saved when Katherine brought him a vile filled witih the cure, Klaus’ blood thanks to his brother Stefan for making a deal with klaus for his blood for damon.

He is best friends with Alaric Saltzman and Elena Gilbert. He is helping Elena with her new found vampire-ism. Damon is a member of the Salvatore Family and a member of the Town Council.

Katerina Petrova

“Humanity is a vampire's greatest weakness. No matter how easy it is to turn it off, it keeps trying to fight it's way back in. Sometimes I let it.” – Katherine to Stefan (in Homecoming).

Katerina Petrova (Bulgarian: Катерина Петрова; English:Katherine Pierce), is a vampire and the former lover to both the Salvatore brothers, Damon and Stefan. Katerina first appeared in recurring flashbacks, depicting her role and her physically romantic relationship with the Salvatore brothers, eventually turning them both into vampires, but was captured by the townspeople of Mystic Falls to be destroyed. To Klaus' knowledge she is a part of the Petrova Doppelgängers family line.

However, behind her sweet nature Katherine has revealed her deceptive side by escaping her would-be death with the help of George Lockwood in 1864. 145 years later, Katherine returned to Mystic Falls, toying with the Salvatores again and cutting off her loose ends by destroying the tomb vampires. Katherine was deeply hated for the murder and the turning of Caroline Forbes into a vampire and using a werewolf, Mason Lockwood, to retrieve the moonstone, an essential element to break The Sun and the Moon Curse. Katherine is exposed as a doppelgänger who spent her immortal life fleeing from an Original named Klaus.

Although she chose Stefan over Damon, she promised John Gilbert that she would help protect her descendant Elena Gilbert, who is the center of the Salvatore brothers hearts. She is initially portrayed as the main antagonist, but the arrival of Elijah, an Original vampire, diminishes her attitude and frightens her with the knowledge of Klaus, causing her to flee Mystic Falls.

Katerina Petrova is a member of the Petrova Family.

Elena Gilbert

“Last time I was here I was so completely in love with Stefan. Now that's barely a memory. Is that the sire bond or just that I'm so happy to be here with you?” – Elena to Damon (in O Come, All Ye Faithful).

Elena Gilbert is the heroine, the protagonist and is the main female character of The Vampire Diaries. She is an 18 year old vampire who was recently turned with the help of Damon's blood. She lives in the supernatural town of Mystic Falls, Virginia, in the Salvatore Boarding House with her new boyfriend, Damon Salvatore.  She was living with her adoptive brother and biological cousin, Jeremy at 2104 Maple Street but due of his hunter issues she had to move out. She is best friends with Caroline Forbes and Bonnie Bennett. Elena had an on-and-off romantic relationship with Stefan Salvatore, a 165 year old vampire until losing him when he gave himself over to Klaus in exchange for the cure to a werewolf bite caused by hybrid blood, to save Damon Salvatore, his brother.

However she is now in a romantic relationship with Stefan's older brother, Damon, who is both dangerous and seductive. He is in love with her and ever since becoming a vampire, her feelings for him have grown stronger. She attends Mystic Falls High School, where she is a former cheerleader, honor student, and one of the most popular girls in the school. Elena wants to become a great writer; she stated this in a conversation with Stefan, and she has a diary in which she writes everything that happens in her life. She was originally turned in this direction by her mother. She was given her first diary by her.

Elena has to deal with trying to lead a normal life ever since her adoptive parents died in a car accident. Even if she had never met the Salvatore brothers, or fallen in love with them, she would be in danger due to her being the second Petrova doppelgänger. Stefan unexpectedly saved Elena's life on May 23, 2009 when her adoptive parents' car went off Wickery Bridge. He tried to save her father Grayson, insisted that he save Elena first.

When Stefan pulled Elena out of the car, he was shocked and taken back when he saw that Elena looked like Katherine; he could not believe the uncanny resemblance between the two. Stefan then took Elena to the Mystic Falls Hospital, and had been watching her ever since for about four months, and learning about her to make sure that she is safe and not at all Katherine Pierce, or even mildly like her. Elena said that it was a "miracle" that she had survived such a horrific and tragic car accident and she questioned how it was in any way possible that she survived and made it out of the car. After discovering what a pure heart she had, Stefan realized he could not leave Mystic Falls without knowing her, so began at her school.

After she discovers the secret of the Salvatore brothers, Elena has to deal with the murders and lies in her life as well as supernatural events and characters. She is described as a star student. She is popular, sporty, smart, kindhearted, compassionate, selfless, empathetic, caring, and nice. She can be rather vulnerable and a damsel in distress, although she does possess a strong-willed, determined, passionate and fiery streak.

Now being a vampire, she learns how to be one with the help of her love, Damon, her family, and her friends.

Elena is a member of the Gilbert Family and the Petrova Family.

Mystic Falls

Mystic Falls is a picturesque town located in the southern area of Virginia. Aside from the towns foundation in 1859 (in the series timeline) by the Founding Families, the town also has a long history of vampires, witches and werewolves. Because of these, Mystic Falls is an Uncanny Village with a Dark Secret . So many important historical facts happened here, one might think it's the Center of the Universe.

As the Founder's Council, they secretly guard the town mainly from vampires, and they are seemingly unaware of other supernatural beings, such as werewolves and witches.

- The Founder's Council

The Founders Council is an association of the Founding Families, townspeople descended from the original settlers of Mystic Falls, as well as various municipal officials. Outwardly, it appears to be a civic organization dedicated to celebrating local history. Secretly the council's mission is to protect the town from supernatural beings, specifically vampires. Journals written by members of the Founding Families describe vampires and how to catch and kill them are passed down through subsequent generations.

     As a Winter Wonderland-themed party fills the streets of Mystic Falls, Stefan and Caroline find themselves at odds with Tyler over his plans for Klaus and his hybrids. When Caroline proposes a solution to their problem, Hayley finds a dramatic way to make it clear that she is not on board. Later, Klaus makes a discovery that leads to chaos and violence. Meanwhile, Elena and Damon retreat to the Gilbert Lake House to help Jeremy conquer some dangerous inner demons with the help of Bonnie and Professor Shane, who reveals a piece of ancient history that leaves them all speechless.
